 About Alma
IMG_6768.JPG

Mother of djevina, goddess of disobedience and ultimate pleasure

”

The overall purpose of my work is to participate in collective feminist emancipation and the continuous development of my artwork towards multiplex visual forms.

Alma Gačanin is an artist, poet, and feminist based in Sarajevo. Completed her master's (2016) and bachelor's (2012) degrees in Education in Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo. Alma works with different mediums, including drawing, photography, performance, and video. In her works and work experiences, she deals with the position of women in capitalism, problems of the new working class, class stratification and labor, rights, precariousness, and overall critique of capitalism and its structural part, the goddamn patriarchy. ZVONO Award winner in 2022, as the best artist in Bosnia and Herzegovina under the age of 35.  Represented Bosnia and Herzegovina in Mediterranea 17, Young Artists Biennale in Milan, 2015. Guest artist in First International Video Art Forum in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, 2018. Alma uses her social roles to emphasize the difficulties and problems that workers experience. Her recent role as a flight attendant in the Middle East was tackling the nuances of precarious work and questioning the concept of the good life through something we perceive as a dream job. Her poems are published in magazines, collections, and web portals in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as in the region.

*djevina: one name, many manifestations.
